Tasmanian Sabot State Championships at Kingston Beach Sailing Club

Over the March Long Weekend, the Kingston Beach Sailing Club (KBSC) hosted the Tasmanian Sabot Sailing Association State Championships. The 3 day regatta was a resounding success with over 40 children aged 8 years to 14 years participating, with their attendant parents and siblings bringing the number of guests at KBSC to over 100.

The State Championships were decided over 9 races in mainly light winds and the Race Officer, David Graney, did a fantastic job in setting fair courses in the shifting conditions.

In the Senior Division, Sam King’s Red Herring (Dinghy Group) emerged as the State Champion after a weekend tussling with Tom Cooper in Snap-e-Tom (Port Dalrymple) and the ever consistent Edmund Hargreaves in the Starter Kit. Jaxon Stickler (Port Dalrymple) showed that he will need to be reckoned with next season, finishing in 4th place overall with 3 wins in the series.

The Junior Division saw Joshua and Daniel Ragg in White Knuckle Ride (KBSC) take out the State Championship from the 2Hot2Touch combination of Ruby and Max Edmunds (Port Dalrymple) with Lucy Cooper and Taylor Edmunds in Wind Song (Port Dalrymple) finishing third. The Ragg brothers won 8 out of the 9 races over the weekend despite a number of close finishes with the Port Dalrymple crews.

The Coached Division, for young sailors who are new to the sabot class, also saw some excellent and brave efforts. Fynn Sprott (KBSC) only got his sabot the day before the regatta and showed great promise over the weekend, occasionally assisted by his sister Zalia. Similarly, Lachlan Richardson (Insalt) and Amelia Bentley (ItSabote) from Dinghy Group showed just how much a regatta can improve sailing skills, finishing off the Championship by successfully completing all 3 races on the final day.

Kingston Beach Sailing Club members ran an extremely well organised regatta and were assisted by TSSA parents from all over the State in the day-to-day jobs that compose a regatta, from rescue boat and mark boat crews, race management, to beach patrol and dinghy launching, through to canteen and dinners. The social highlight of the weekend was the very well attended family buffet meal held at the Club on Sunday night – an event that everyone agreed capped off a very busy, but most enjoyable, weekend of junior sailing.
